aSPECT uses a silicon drift detector (SDD) that has originally been developed to detect X-rays. It has a sufficiently thin deadlayer (approx. 100 nm) to allow the detection of the decay protons from neutron beta decay after they have been accelerated electrostatically to 15 keV.

Mounted in the aSPECT detector cup (2012). The detector cup is the electrode that holds the detector. Together with the detector it is on a high voltage of typically 15 kV. The detector cup also shields the detector agains most direct HV breakdowns and sparks.
