Research

My area of expertise and interest is experimental nuclear physics and particle-astrophysics at low energies. I investigate the fundamental interactions and their symmetries using precision measurements of neutron and nuclear β-decay with the goal to search for physics beyond the standard electroweak model1 .

At present I am involved in the aSPECT, tSPECT and KATRIN experiments: 

  • aSPECT – measurement of the coupling constants gV and gA of the V-A model, investigation of the unitarity of the CKM matrix, search for exotic interactions, investigation of the symmetries of the weak interaction (e.g. parity violation); all by the determination of the beta-neutrino angular correlation in the decay of the free neutron. aSPECT has had a successfull beam time at the Institut Laue Langevin in 2013. The data analysis is ongoing. We expect an uncertainty on the beta-neutrino angular correlation at the level of da/a of 1-2%.
  • tSPECT – measurement of the neutron lifetime using fully magnetic storage at the UCN-source of the TRIGA reactor in Mainz.

    Work area: the full experiment including experimental set-up, data taking and data analysis.
  • KATRIN – search for the mass of the electron-antineutrino.

    Work area: calibration and monitoring, calibration sources, rear wall, work function measurements.

Since all three experiments, aSPECT, tSPECT and KATRIN use electrostatic filters with magnetic collimation (MAC-E filters) many experimental problems are similar and developments or improvements at one of these experiments may be applied at one of the others. This offers great synergetic effects.
